HAVANA, Cuba, May 26. The Latin American Studies Association (LASA) officially conferred the 2012 Prize of Excellence on Cuban poet and essayist Nancy Morejon.
Received on Friday in the United States by Miguel Barnet, president of the Cuban Association of Writers and Artists (UNEAC), the prize, granted for her studies on Cuba, honors the intellectual for her vast work, originality, scope and commitment. A full member of the Cuban Academy of Language, Advisor to Havana’s Casa de las Americas cultural Institution, and president of the Writers Section of the UNEAC, Morejon is also a promoter of the Grand Caribbean as cultural conception. She has published over 10 collections of poems and several essay and research books; she obtained the National Literature Prize in 2001; and received the Victor Hugo medal granted by the United Nations Education, Science and Culture Organization (UNESCO).
