Cuban Decathlete Wins IAAF Meeting in the Czech Republic PDF Print E-mail

Leonel SuarezHAVANA, Cuba, Jun 16. Cuban decathlete Leonel Suarez won the gold medal of one the third stop of the 2011 IAAF World Combined Events Challenge that took place on Wednesday and Thursday in the Czech city of Kladno.


The Cuban 2008 Olympic silver medallist in Beijing accumulated 8,231 points to relegate Belgian Hans van Alphen (8120) and South African Willem Coertzen (8,094) to the second and third spots, respectively.

In the previous stop of this year’s IAAF World Combined Events Challenge, in Gotzis, Austria, Suarez placed second with 8,440 points, only behind reigning World champion Trey Hardee, from the U.S., who set a world season lead with 8,689 units.

According to the official website of the event, the two other Cuban athletes participating in the competition, Yordanis Garcia (8,067) and Yunior Diaz (7,510), placed sixth and 14th, respectively.
