HAVANA, Cuba, June 29. The Bolshoi Theater of Moscow will pay tribute in August to prima ballerina assoluta Alicia Alonso for her brilliant contribution to classic dance, sources of Cuba’s National Ballet Company (BNC) informed.
On August 2, the Muscovite coliseum will offer a special gala to the legendary ballerina for her brilliant professional career as interpreter, choreographer and professor, and for her significance in the history of international ballet.
Organized for one of the best ballerinas of all time who danced for the first time with the Bolshoi in 1958, stars Svetlana Zajarova and Andrei Uvarov and eight figures of the BNC will join to dance for the occasion.
The Bolshoi Theater ballet performed in Cuba on February, 2010, after 30 years of absence from the island’s stages.
Alicia continues to direct her company actively, which she founded in 1948 and receives tributes since 2010 from around the world on the occasion of her 90th birthday last December.
The Cuban legend of dance has just returned from a tour of the United States, the first one she carried out with her company, of which she said made her feel overcome by emotion for the shouts of “Long live Cuba!” from an audience that, in each presentation, dedicated standing ovations to the troupe.
A cultural ambassador of the Cuban Revolution, Alicia began her artistic career with the US company New York City Ballet and then became a world star, as headliner of the American Ballet Theatre.
